Water In Bituminous Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10365

The Water In Bituminous Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the water content of petroleum products and bituminous materials by distillation with a water-immiscible, volatile solvent, following the Dean and Stark distillation principle.

How It Works

A weighed sample is mixed with a water-immiscible solvent (such as xylene) and heated to reflux in a distillation flask connected to a graduated water-trap receiver. The solvent vapour carries any water present in the sample over into the condenser, where it condenses and collects, separated from the solvent, in the graduated trap. The volume of water collected is read directly and expressed as a percentage of the original sample mass.

Applications

The Water In Bituminous Apparatus is used to determine water content in petroleum and bituminous products under ASTM D95 / IS 1211, the standard test methods for water in petroleum products and bituminous materials by distillation, in asphalt binder QC laboratories checking for moisture contamination that can affect binder performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What does this apparatus measure?
It measures the percentage of water present in a petroleum or bituminous material sample, by distilling it with a water-immiscible solvent and collecting the water in a graduated trap.

Q2. Why is water content important in bitumen?
Excess water in bitumen can cause foaming during heating and mixing, and can affect the accuracy of other property tests, so checking water content is a routine bitumen QC step.

Q3. What solvent is used for the test?
A water-immiscible, volatile solvent such as xylene is used, which carries the sample's water content over during distillation while remaining separate from it in the graduated receiver.
