The Sand Density Cone Apparatus is used to determine the in-situ dry density of fine-grained compacted soil by the sand replacement method, a standard field check on earthwork and pavement layer compaction.
How It Works
A small hole is excavated in the compacted soil layer and the excavated material is collected, dried and weighed. The sand pouring cylinder, fitted with this density cone base, is then used to fill the hole with a calibrated free-flowing sand of known bulk density; the volume of the hole is back-calculated from the mass of sand used, allowing the in-situ dry density of the soil to be determined.
