How It Works
A sample of fine aggregate is placed in a graduated glass bottle with a sodium hydroxide solution and shaken, then left to stand; any organic impurities present colour the supernatant liquid, and the resulting colour is compared visually against a set of standard reference colours or glass colour plates. A colour matching or exceeding the specified reference indicates a potentially injurious level of organic material that may need further investigation before the aggregate is used in concrete.
