Cleveland Flash and Burning Point Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10374

The Cleveland Flash and Burning Point Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the flash point and fire (burning) point of petroleum products using the Cleveland open cup method, applicable to products with flash and fire points at or above 79 °C.

How It Works

A measured sample is heated in an open test cup at a controlled, steadily increasing rate using continuous silicon-controlled temperature adjustment. At specified intervals, a small automatic test flame is passed across the surface of the sample; the flash point is recorded as the lowest temperature at which the flame causes a momentary flash across the surface, and the fire (burning) point is recorded as the temperature at which the sample ignites and continues to burn for at least 5 seconds.

Applications

The Cleveland Flash and Burning Point Apparatus is used to determine flash and fire points of petroleum products under ASTM D92 / IS 1448 [P:69], the standard test methods for flash and fire points by Cleveland open cup, an important safety-related property test for handling and storing bitumen, cutback bitumen, and other petroleum-derived binders. It is used in asphalt binder QC laboratories and petroleum testing facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the difference between flash point and fire point?
The flash point is the lowest temperature at which vapour above the sample momentarily ignites when a test flame passes over it; the fire point is the higher temperature at which the sample ignites and continues burning for at least 5 seconds.

Q2. What products can this apparatus test?
It is applicable to petroleum products with flash and fire points at or above 79 °C, covering most bitumen and heavier petroleum-derived binders used in road construction.

Q3. Why is flash and fire point testing important?
These properties indicate the temperature at which a petroleum product becomes a fire hazard during heating, storage, and handling, informing safe processing temperatures at asphalt plants.
