Calcium Carbide is a chemical reagent supplied for use in the speedy (rapid) moisture testing method for soil.
How It Works
A measured quantity of moist soil is sealed in the speedy moisture tester's pressure vessel together with calcium carbide reagent and steel balls; the calcium carbide reacts with the free moisture in the soil sample to generate acetylene gas, and the resulting gas pressure, read on the tester's calibrated gauge, is directly correlated to the sample's moisture content.
